Your 14-day right to change your mind

Sign a contract for windows or doors in your own home and you get 14 calendar days to cancel it, for any reason at all. That's the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, and it applies to us exactly as it applies to anyone else sat at your kitchen table. The clock starts the day after the contract is made. Cancel inside it and any deposit you've paid comes back in full. You don't owe anybody an explanation, and you shouldn't have to argue for it. We'd rather you knew that up front than found it out later.

If you ask us to start inside those 14 days

You can still cancel, and you only pay for the work that's actually been done. Some jobs won't wait – a door that won't lock, a window letting the weather in – so you can ask us to crack on before the 14 days are up. Change your mind after that and we can charge for what's finished at that point, not the full job. Ask for the early start in writing, and ask what it would cost you if you pulled out halfway. Any honest firm will put that on paper. So will we.

What any quote should say in writing

Three things, and it's worth checking ours as hard as you check anybody else's. For a contract you sign at home, the 2013 regulations expect it to name the trader and their address, give you the total price, and set out your right to cancel and how to use it. In writing, at or before the point you sign. If a quote you're holding is missing any of them, ask the firm why before you sign anything. Print this list off and hold ours against it.
